In the same motivation study, participating
employees were asked "what did their leaders
actually do to create this unusual environment?"
Their response logically fell into five categories
that we subsequently entitled the five dimensions of
transformational leadership behaviors.
The behavior
patterns can be grouped under the following
dimensions:
Taking people
places they have never been
Getting people excited about
going to new places
Enabling others to act through
coaching and support
Building relationships based
upon trust and respect
Setting the
example and modeling the way
Of interest,
this Transformational Leadership Behavior Model well
tracks the work of Kouzes and Posner, from the Santa
Clara Business School & authors of "The Leadership
Challenge". It also is well aligned with the basic
research of Bernard Bass (Binghampton Univ.) and
Bruce Avolio (Univ. of Nebraska). Bass and Avolio
translated their work into a 360 degree leadership
assessment (Multi-factor Leadership Questionaire or
MLQ) which has become the instrument of choice for
Transformational Leadership research over the past
20 years. It measures a full range of leadership
behaviors (heavy on transformational) and has proven
to be predictive of outcomes and results. The MLQ is
the assessment tool that we use to establish a
behavioral basis for coaching leaders in both our
consulting and coaching projects. The MLQ categories
are shown in the model above, next to their TLCC™
model counterparts.
There is overwhelming antidotal
and statistical evidence showing that
transformational leaders get better results. So, in
a world that is rapidly becoming "flat" and bringing
with it the extraordinary competitive pressures we
are all feeling today, you need a leadership
development strategy that will keep you in the game.
We all need to supplement our managing and leading
skills with those transformational behaviors that
will take our organizations to the next level of
performance .
